50 years ago in Burke: South Mountain to build new dormitory
South Mountain Institute announced plans today for constructing a boy's dormitory at an estimated cost of $60,000. Trustees of the child-caring institution said bids will be requested soon on a one-story building to house 16 older boys plus quarters for a couple serving as their cottage parents. Heretofore the older boy's have been assigned quarters in the basement of the existing building. Burand L. McGinnis, president of the board, said the project is being handled by a building committee composed of the following: Tuxie D. Bowers, chairman, C. Miller Sigmon, treasurer, W. Harold Mitchell, Ray Simmons, and C.D. Hamilton. Several industries in Burke County are supplying the funds for the project.
